The New England Journal of Medicine published a study yesterday that found the antibiotic Azithromycin could increase the chances of sudden death in adults. The odds presented by the researchers are minimal, but are still enough that the study authors believe that physicians should prescribe another drug for those that are considered “high risk” patients.
The researchers say those at a higher risk for sudden death when taking azithromycin are those who have had a heart attack, have heart failure or diabetes, or those who have had stents or bypass surgery. The increased risk is that the patient could have abnormal heart rhythms that could be fatal. Unfortunately, researchers are not quite sure how the heart rhythms are affected. The study did not address any concerns with children because most of them do not have a high risk of heart disease.
The study was completed at Vanderbilt University by Wayne Ray. Ray is a preventive medicine professor and says that there were two other antibiotics that were already thought to increase the risks of sudden death; however, azithromycin was thought by the medical industry to be much safer.
Azithromycin is often used to treat pneumonia, bronchitis, earaches, and sore throats. Many people are probably familiar with the “Z-Pak” which is taken for only five days compared to ten days by most other regimes of antibiotic treatment. In the United States alone, there were over 55 million prescriptions written for azithromycin with sales for $464 million.
